Biography

Early life

Sandy was born in the St. Charles Parish Hospital in Boutte in 2004. Her parents, Rae Bordelon and Michael Kinnord split up shortly after her birth, with Michael moving to Texas to work for the still new Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. Michael, intent on leaving quickly, agreed to give Rae full custody of Sandy. For most of her life, he has called her only every few months and visited every couple of years. She has never met her stepmother or her two half-brothers.

Relationships

During the fall of 2019, Sandy began dating Amalia Mercado. Had the pandemic not happened, they would not likely still be dating, but the separation during the spring of 2020 drew out the relationship. Although she is not secretive about her sexuality, she does not talk about it often, feeling no particular need to "come out" to anyone, and simply assuming everyone knows as much as they need to know about her.

Like many of the kids in Dutchtown, Sandy is intrigued by Cash who does not fit any of the their expectations of an adult. Sandy feels particularly unique in that she and her mother seem to be two of Cash's few friends. While her friends like to view Cash from a distance, scared to get too near, Sandy has no qualms about talking with him or sitting on his porch. Because she likes Cash, she is troubled by the suggestion of a romantic relationship between Cash and her mother. Not jealousy, for the most part, her concern is that Cash would not be happy in a relationship with Rae.

Characteristics

Physical Appearance

Sandy, by all accounts, is a virtual clone of Rae, looking at 15 exactly as Rae did. Sandy currently wears her hair long and dyes it a reddish brown, mostly because it is the opposite of her mothers short, punky hairstyles. Sandy stands 5'4" and is fairly thin. Her efforts to stay out of her house generally involve skateboarding and bikeriding.

Personality

Sandy learned a long time ago that her parents were more concerned with their own needs than hers. She accepted this and became a largely self-sufficient teenager, currently limited by her inability to work. More like her parents than she thinks, she is generally focused on immediate gratification and short term goals.

Plot Synopsis

Get It All Back

During the lockdown, Sandy's mother, Rae, allowed her ex-boyfriend, Joey, to move back in with them. Sandy had never gotten along with Joey, who was abusive with her mother. Living down the street from Cash, Sandy would often walk to his house to sit on his porch in order to use is wifi, which was much better than what Joey had set up at her mother's house. When she would talk to Cash, she would drop hints about Joey's inappropriate looks and comments to her, exaggerating sometimes to get the point across.

In May, Sandy set up a script to download onto Joey's laptop videos and images from various porn sites, focusing the script's search on very young looking girls. Each night the script would download a random number of files into a special folder that the script would then delete a few hours later. After a month of this, Sandy increased her comments to Cash, making clear that she was concerned with her own safety, and mentioning how much time Joey spent on his laptop late at night after Rae had gone to bed. Cash, guided by Sandy's comments, accessed the modem's log and shared the findings with Rae, who promptly kicked Joey out of the house.

Sandy had expected some pushback from Joey but not that he would attack Cash. She was also not expecting her mother to interpret Cash's actions as an attempt to pursue a relationship, as Sandy was unaware of the two times Cash and Rae had hooked up. In a panic after realizing Rae was at Cash's one night (09 June), Sandy made it seem as if someone has tried to break her bedroom window with rocks. After tossing some stones onto the porch roof under her window, she broke the window with a rubber mallet. When Cash and Rae arrived a few minutes later, she told them she saw someone in the street just before she heard the rocks hitting the window.

Two days later (11 June), Sandy and Amalia talk to Cash as he works on his car. While Amalia clearly has a small crush on Cash, Sandy feels a familial connection with him. During the conversation, she mentions both her recent arguments with her mother and her father's attempts to change the custody agreement, making it clear she isn't happy at home but also doesn't want to spend any time with him in Texas. Cash again picks up on her overt hints and says he will look into things for her.

When Sandy next sees Cash while she and Amalia are skateboarding (17 June) and playing with firecrackers, she misinterprets his concern. Cash tells her that any time she needs a place to go to get away, she can find him. The next day (18 June), after another fight with Rae, Sandy breaks into Cash's house while he is in Sadie. In addition to smoking his pot, she reviews all the material he has gathered about Gerry and Greer. Hélène finds Sandy hiding in Cash's house and talks with her about the fight. When Cash arrives, he talks to Sandy about how he left Sleepy Hollow and stayed on the move for many years. After returning to her house, Sandy gets into another fight with Rae after acknowledging that she set up Joey. After locking herself in her room, Sandy, not wanting to listen to Rae bang on the door, sneaks out through her window and hides in the bed of Cash's truck.

The following day (19 June), Cash drives to Sadie without knowing that Sandy is in his truck. Sandy realizes her mistake as he drives over the Causeway as she often feels like she is about to be thrown from the truck. She tries calling him several times but only gets his voicemail. After Cash parks the truck and disappears into the pine forest, Sandy calls Hélène. At first, Sandy listens to Hélène and stays hidden with the truck, but eventually follows the path he took and, hiding behind a tree, sees Cash running toward the truck with his hands tied behind his back before he is tackled and dragged back to the cabin. She decides he needs her help immediately. Throwing a large rock through the front window and then tossing down some firecrackers, she manages to scare off the men in the cabin. She finds Cash unconscious on the floor with Gerry, also unconscious, on top of him. Before Hélène arrives, Sandy grabs the old laptop sitting on the couch and puts it in Cash's truck. Once Hélène gets to the cabin, she and Sandy decide the best thing to do is put Cash and the old man in the back of the truck, drop Gerry off at the hospital, and then drive the truck back to Sadie. Sandy offers to stay in the back of the truck after the doctor tells them that Gerry likely has COVID.

Back home, Sandy must quarantine at Rae's house. During the confinement, they come to a truce from the fighting. Rae will let Sandy work a part-time job as long as it is an outdoor job and as long as she keeps her grades up. Sandy will save half of each paycheck.

After their two-week quarantine, Sandy goes out skateboarding with Amalia and some friends. They have all watched as Cash built the long dock across his yard and into the bayou. In order to show off, Sandy takes them all to Cash's house and asks if they can play on the dock. Eventually, Sandy takes a dare to jump into the bayou and executes and impressive skateboarding move to do so.
